Starting in 2026, this bill would create statewide open enrollment, letting families apply to almost any public school in Michigan, not just nearby districts. Schools could deny students mainly for lack of space or serious discipline history, not where they live. Districts must post open seats, accept applications year-round, answer within 30 days, allow appeals, and cannot charge tuition. This could expand choice, but transportation is still not guaranteed and popular schools may face crowding.
