1000 Friends of Florida is a statewide non‑profit advocacy organization founded in 1986 that promotes smart growth, strong land‑use planning, conservation of natural lands and water resources, affordable housing, and resilient, walkable communities across Florida.
Land use and growth management, smart growth and infill development, protection of natural lands and waters (springs, rivers, Everglades), transportation and transit planning, affordable housing and housing finance, climate resilience and sea‑level rise planning, community planning and citizen participation, litigation to defend planning laws.
Primarily funded by individual donations and membership dues, foundation and philanthropic grants, events and program support, and occasional project grants.
Frequently works with Florida Conservation Voters, Sierra Club Florida, Audubon Florida, Florida Housing Coalition, The Nature Conservancy (Florida), local community and civic groups and university partners.
