About the Organization

The 1990 Institute is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1990 that develops educational programming, multimedia resources, teacher workshops, and youth convenings to improve mutual understanding between the United States and China and to champion the fair and equitable treatment of Asian Americans. The organization focuses on classroom resources, public education, and people-to-people exchange to reduce bias and strengthen constructive U.S.–China engagement.

Policy Goals

Education policy (K–12 ethnic/AAPI studies and teacher support), civil rights and anti-hate/anti-discrimination policy, public diplomacy and U.S.–China exchange and engagement, selective immigration/student visa issues and advocacy related to academic exchange, funding and support for educational programs and curriculum resources.

Funding

Primarily foundation and individual donations and grants, supplemented by program-related contributions and occasional event fundraising.

Affiliates

Board leadership and prominent affiliates have included Grace H. Yu (Board Chair & President), Dr. Daniel K.H. Chao (board member and long-time supporter), and partnerships or collaborations with K–12 schools, Asian American community groups and academic networks such as Asian American studies programs, community partners that have included Stop AAPI Hate and local schools involved in teachers workshops; the organization has also collaborated historically with entities working on U.S.–China exchanges.
