The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide nonprofit organization founded in 1920 that works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and federal and state laws. It engages in litigation, advocacy, and public education to protect civil rights and civil liberties for all people in the United States.
Civil rights and civil liberties policy including voting rights, criminal justice reform, free speech, religious liberty, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, privacy and surveillance limits, racial justice, and equal protection under the law.
Primarily funded through individual donations, foundation grants, membership dues, and fundraising campaigns.
