The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is a national labor union that represents public service workers including healthcare aides, corrections officers, sanitation workers, nurses, clerical staff, and other state, county and municipal employees. Its stated mission is to improve wages, benefits and working conditions through collective bargaining, political advocacy, member organizing and campaigns for economic and racial justice and strong public services.
Advocates for public‑sector collective bargaining rights, fair wages and benefits, retirement and pension security, workplace health and safety, funding for public services, progressive tax and budget priorities, expanded access to healthcare, voting rights and civic participation, and anti‑discrimination and racial justice measures.
Primarily funded by member dues and member contributions; additional revenue from member fundraising and political contributions through its affiliated political action committee and from occasional grants and investments.
Affiliated with the AFL‑CIO and a network of state and local AFSCME councils and chapters; works in coalition with other labor unions and progressive organizations and operates AFSCME’s political action committee and retirees groups.
