About the Organization

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is a U.S. membership-based organization that promotes academic freedom, tenure, shared governance, and professional standards for faculty and higher education. It conducts research, issues policy statements, provides legal and advocacy support for faculty, and organizes campus chapters and national conferences.

Policy Goals

Advocates for academic freedom and free inquiry, protection and reform of tenure, faculty governance and due process, equitable faculty employment (including adjunct and contingent faculty issues), public investment in higher education, opposition to excessive privatization and corporatization of universities, and policies supporting research freedom and scholar mobility.

Funding

Primarily funded by membership dues and subscriptions, supplemented by donations, grants, publications sales, and conference fees.

Affiliates

Campus AAUP chapters nationwide; the AAUP Foundation; frequent collaborators and allies in higher-education and labor policy work such as faculty unions and organizations like the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and other higher education associations.
