The American Fisheries Society (AFS) is the largest professional society for fisheries and aquatic scientists in North America; its mission is to advance the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems through science, education, and advocacy for evidence-based management.
Promotes science-based fisheries and aquatic resource management, habitat conservation and restoration, sustainable harvest and allocation policies, invasive species prevention and control, fish health and disease management, funding for fisheries research and monitoring, and workforce education and training.
Primarily funded by membership dues, subscriptions and sales of journals and publications, conference and continuing-education fees, grants and contracts from foundations and government agencies, and donations.
State and regional AFS chapters and student subunits, technical sections (e.g., Fisheries Management, Aquatic Stewardship), partnerships with federal and state fisheries agencies such as NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and collaborations with universities and conservation organizations.
