The American Humanist Association (AHA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization that advances secular humanism and progressive civic values by promoting the separation of church and state, defending the civil and legal rights of nonreligious people, supporting humanist community-building and celebrant services, and publishing commentary and education on humanist philosophy.
Advocacy for church–state separation and secular governance; legal defense of First Amendment and equal treatment for nonreligious people; support for science-based public policy, public education without religious influence, reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, prison and chaplaincy services for nonbelievers, and related civil liberties issues.
Primarily supported by membership dues and individual donations, supplemented by grants, gifts/bequests, program fees, and fundraising events.
Appignani Humanist Legal Center (AHA legal arm), The Humanist Society (celebrant and chaplaincy programs), The Humanist magazine, and collaborative relationships with secular advocacy groups such as the Secular Coalition for America; notable historical affiliated figures include Kurt Vonnegut (former honorary president).
