The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is a student-led, national nonprofit that represents and trains medical and premedical students in advocacy, leadership, and professional development. Its mission emphasizes health equity, evidence-based policy, and preparing future physicians to address public health, medical education, and social justice issues.
Typically advocates on medical education and training reform, student debt relief and physician wellness, expanded access to affordable health care and public insurance options, public health and preventive care, reproductive health and sexual health rights, health equity and anti-racism policies, substance use disorder and opioid policy, gun violence prevention as a public health issue, and climate/environmental health.
Primarily funded through membership dues, donations, grants, sponsorships, and revenue from conferences and training programs.
A nationwide network of local AMSA chapters at U.S. medical and premedical schools and partnerships with other student medical organizations, public health groups, and health-justice advocacy organizations.
