About the Organization

The American Public Health Association (APHA) is a membership-based nonprofit organization founded in 1872 that works to improve the health of the public and achieve health equity through advocacy, policy development, education, scientific research, and practice support.

Policy Goals

Public health and disease prevention; health equity and social determinants of health; access to health care and public insurance; infectious disease control and immunization; tobacco and substance-use prevention; environmental and occupational health and climate policy; injury and violence prevention (including gun violence prevention); maternal and child health and reproductive health; public health workforce and funding.

Funding

Membership dues, conference and meeting registration fees, publications and journal subscriptions, foundation and government grants, philanthropic donations, and corporate sponsorships.

Affiliates

State and local public health associations and sections, the American Journal of Public Health, the APHA Action Fund (advocacy arm), public health schools and academic partners, and prominent leaders such as Dr. Georges C. Benjamin.

Legal Structure

Non-profit membership organization (primarily 501(c)(3)), with affiliated advocacy entities (including a 501(c)(4) action fund).
