About the Organization

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is a national trade association representing all segments of the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. Founded in 1919, API advocates for policies that promote domestic energy production, free markets, and technological innovation while developing industry standards to enhance safety and environmental performance.

Policy Goals

Energy production and exploration policy, offshore and onshore drilling regulation, pipeline infrastructure, environmental and climate regulation, fuel standards, taxation of energy companies, and federal leasing and permitting policy.

Funding

Membership dues and contributions from oil and natural gas companies.

Affiliates

Member companies include major oil and gas producers such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and BP; affiliated initiatives include API Energy Excellence.
