Appalachian Voices is a regional environmental nonprofit, founded in 1997, that works to protect the land, air and water of Central and Southern Appalachia and to advance a just transition from fossil fuels to clean, community-centered energy. The organization combines grassroots organizing, technical assistance, policy advocacy and a regional publication (The Appalachian Voice) to support community resilience, public health and ecosystem protection.
Pursues policies to end mountaintop removal and remediate coal-related pollution (including coal ash), oppose unnecessary fossil fuel infrastructure such as fracked-gas pipelines, advance renewable energy and energy-efficiency programs, promote utility and regulatory reforms that protect ratepayers and communities, and embed environmental justice and equitable economic development into regional transition planning.
Primarily supported by foundation grants and individual donations, supplemented by other philanthropic grants, membership and fundraising revenue and occasional program-related contracts.
Publishes The Appalachian Voice and regularly partners with local community organizations and regional and national environmental groups and coalitions, including organizations such as the Sierra Club, Southern Environmental Law Center and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, among others.
