The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is a New York–based nonprofit public interest law firm founded to protect and promote the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legislative and administrative advocacy, community education, and leadership development.
Typically pursues civil rights and anti-discrimination policy, immigrant and language-access protections, voting rights and redistricting fairness, workers' rights and wage enforcement, fair housing and education equity, police accountability and criminal-justice reform, and anti-hate-violence measures.
Primarily funded by foundation grants and philanthropic donations, supplemented by individual contributions, attorneys' fees and recoveries, and occasional government grants or contracts.
Partners with regional and national Asian American and Pacific Islander community organizations, legal groups such as the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), and broader civil-rights organizations including the ACLU and NAACP; collaborates with prominent community and legal leaders on campaigns and litigation.
