About the Organization

Birth in Color is a Virginia-based nonprofit founded in 2018 that provides culturally centered doula care, childbirth education, midwifery services, storytelling and community advocacy to improve maternal and reproductive health outcomes for Black, Indigenous and other people of color. The organization’s mission is to advance reproductive justice and dismantle systemic barriers to equitable perinatal care.

Policy Goals

Maternal health equity; reproductive justice; expanding access to culturally competent doula and midwifery services; Medicaid and insurance coverage for community-based birth supports; perinatal and postpartum support services; racial equity in health-care delivery and policy.

Funding

Primarily individual donations, foundation and philanthropic grants, fundraising events, and program fees for trainings and services; may also receive targeted grants for advocacy or service expansion.

Affiliates

Works with local community health centers, Virginia-based reproductive justice and maternal health coalitions, doula and midwifery networks, and community advocacy leaders and organizers.
