The Boston City Council is the 13-member elected legislative body for the City of Boston that drafts and adopts local ordinances, approves the municipal budget, performs oversight of city departments, and represents constituent interests across Boston's neighborhoods with a focus on citywide equity, public services, and local governance.

Publicly funded through the City of Boston municipal budget—primarily local tax revenues and allocations from state and federal grants; council operations and member salaries are paid from the city budget.
