The California Women’s Law Center (CWLC) is a California-based public interest law center founded in 1989 that advances the civil rights of women and girls through impact litigation, policy advocacy, legal education, and technical assistance. CWLC focuses on removing legal and systemic barriers facing low-income and marginalized women across the state to promote gender equity, safety, health, and economic opportunity.
Advocacy on gender discrimination and Title IX enforcement in education, women’s health and reproductive access, sexual assault and domestic violence protections, economic security for women and families (including equal pay and workplace accommodations), housing and anti-discrimination measures, and related civil-rights and family-safety statutes and regulations.
Primarily funded by foundation grants and philanthropic donations, individual contributors, and institutional grants; revenue also includes support for trainings, technical assistance, and occasional litigation-related grants.
Founded by Sheila Kuehl, Abby Leibman, and Jenifer McKenna; collaborates with legal aid providers, community advocacy groups, bar associations and allied women’s and civil-rights organizations across California.
