About the Organization

Equality Michigan (EQMI) is a statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization that provides education, victim services, advocacy, and community outreach to advance equality and safety for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Michiganders. Its mission is to ensure LGBTQ+ people can live their best lives in Michigan by changing laws, educating the public and institutions, and supporting survivors of violence and discrimination.

Policy Goals

State-level LGBTQ+ policy and legislative work including anti-discrimination protections in employment, housing, and public accommodations; transgender rights and access to gender-affirming care; hate-crime prevention and survivor services; safe schools and anti-bullying measures; voter engagement and electing pro-equality candidates; and opposing anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Funding

Primarily funded by individual donations, philanthropic foundation grants, fundraising events, and supporter memberships; its affiliated action network accepts separate political contributions for advocacy and electoral work.

Affiliates

Equality Michigan Action Network (its political/advocacy arm); national and state LGBTQ partners including the Equality Federation, Human Rights Campaign, ACLU of Michigan, Lambda Legal, and regional community organizations such as Affirmations and the Ruth Ellis Center.

Legal Structure

Non-profit civil rights organization (501(c)(3)) with an affiliated nonpartisan political advocacy arm (Equality Michigan Action Network).
