About the Organization

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a mainline Protestant Christian denomination in the United States that was formed in 1988 through a merger of three Lutheran church bodies. It is one of the largest Lutheran denominations in the country and is committed to worship, service, education, and social ministry, with a stated mission of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and serving communities through outreach, advocacy, and global mission partnerships.

Policy Goals

The ELCA engages in public policy advocacy on issues including social justice, poverty relief, immigration reform, racial equity, environmental stewardship, healthcare access, human rights, disaster response, and international development, often through faith-based social teaching and its advocacy office in Washington, D.C.

Funding

Primarily funded through member congregational contributions, individual donations, and offerings, as well as grants and program-related revenue from affiliated ministries and institutions.
