About the Organization

The Federal Defenders' Legislative Committee is the congressional advocacy arm of the Federal Public and Community Defenders, the national organization representing federal public defender offices and community defender organizations. It speaks for federal indigent defense providers on criminal justice and sentencing matters affecting people who cannot afford counsel.

Policy Goals

Federal criminal justice policy, sentencing reform, criminal procedure, indigent defense funding, Bureau of Prisons oversight, detention and pretrial justice, and related corrections and reentry issues.

Funding

Primarily supported through the federal public defender system and the broader Federal Public and Community Defenders organization, which is funded by congressional appropriations for defender services.

Affiliates

Federal Public and Community Defenders; federal public defender offices nationwide; community defender organizations; Sentencing Resource Counsel; federal public defenders and assistant federal defenders who serve as committee co-chairs or members.
