About the Organization

Freedom of the Press Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit that defends press freedom and public transparency by funding investigative journalism, developing and maintaining secure communications tools for reporters (including SecureDrop), operating the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, providing digital-security training, and undertaking legal and policy advocacy on behalf of journalists and whistleblowers.

Policy Goals

Supports government transparency and open records, protections for journalists and whistleblowers, digital security and strong encryption for newsrooms, limits on government surveillance and undue use of subpoenas or asset seizure against reporters, and public-interest journalism funding and capacity-building.

Funding

Primarily funded by individual donations and crowdfunding, philanthropic foundation grants and institutional support, donor-advised funds and occasional large gifts including cryptocurrency donations and one-off major contributions.

Affiliates

Notable affiliated individuals and partners have included Edward Snowden, Daniel Ellsberg, Laura Poitras, Trevor Timm, Rainey Reitman and Glenn Greenwald, and organizational partners such as numerous newsrooms that deploy SecureDrop and civil-liberties groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
