The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) is a U.S. trade association founded in 1913 that represents manufacturers, distributors and users of commercial explosives and related service providers. Its stated mission is to promote the safe and secure manufacture, transport, distribution and use of commercial explosives through technical standards, training, safety publications and industry data.
Advocates on federal and state regulatory issues affecting manufacture, storage, transport and use of commercial explosives; workplace safety and process safety management; hazardous materials and DOT transport rules; security and access controls coordinated with ATF/DHS; environmental and permitting issues affecting mining, construction and critical mineral production; standards development and industry training requirements.
Primarily funded by member dues from explosives manufacturers, distributors and associate companies, plus fees from training programs, conferences and sales of safety publications and technical materials.
Works closely with member companies such as Dyno Nobel, Orica, Austin Powder and Nelson Brothers, industry groups like the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE), and federal agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA and Department of Homeland Security (DHS); board and member company executives frequently serve as industry contacts.
