The International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) is a North American labor union that represents rank-and-file law enforcement officers, corrections personnel, emergency medical responders and law enforcement support staff. IUPA says its mission is to improve the lives, working conditions and legal protections of public safety officers through collective bargaining, member services, training and advocacy on legislation that affects officer safety, benefits and public safety policy.
Typically advocates for policies that increase funding for law enforcement equipment and training, officer safety initiatives, mental health and wellness programs, collective bargaining and wage/benefit protections for members, federal grant programs for police equipment (e.g., vest programs), and legal protections for officers; it has also opposed reforms it views as reducing officer accountability or workplace protections.
Primarily funded by membership dues and assessments from affiliated local associations, supplemented by donations, fundraising, program fees and other organizational revenue.
Chartered affiliate local police associations across the United States, Canada and U.S. territories; affiliated programs and entities include the Law Enforcement Officers Relief Fund (LEORF) and the Alliance for Retired Law Enforcement Officers (ARLEO); the union is chartered within the AFL-CIO and led by its international officers (e.g., President Sam A. Cabral).
