Lambda Legal is a U.S.-based nonprofit civil rights organization that uses impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and education to advance the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and those living with HIV. It brings strategic lawsuits, files amicus briefs, and conducts public education campaigns to expand legal protections and reduce discrimination.
Pursues LGBTQ+ civil rights and equality across areas including anti-discrimination in employment, housing, education, and public accommodations; marriage and family law; HIV-related rights and access to healthcare; criminal justice and prisoner rights for LGBTQ+ people; immigration issues affecting LGBTQ+ communities; and constitutional litigation and voting rights where relevant.
Primarily funded through individual donations and membership contributions, foundation and philanthropic grants, fundraising events, and pro bono legal partnerships.
Works closely with national and state civil rights and LGBTQ advocacy organizations such as the ACLU, Human Rights Campaign, National Center for Lesbian Rights, GLAD, state LGBTQ advocacy groups, and numerous pro bono law firms and allied civil rights lawyers.
