About the Organization

The Legal Action Center is a national nonprofit public-interest law organization that defends the civil rights of people with criminal records and histories of substance use, and advances their access to employment, housing, education, health care, and public benefits through direct legal representation, litigation, policy advocacy, training, and technical assistance.

Policy Goals

Criminal justice reform, reentry and record sealing/expungement, fair-chance employment and housing access, anti-discrimination for people with criminal records or substance use histories, access to health care and addiction treatment, public benefits protections, and related civil rights litigation and policy advocacy.

Funding

Primarily funded by foundation grants, individual donations, government grants and contracts, and revenue from training and technical-assistance services.

Affiliates

Partners and collaborators often include civil rights and criminal justice organizations such as the ACLU, Vera Institute of Justice, National Employment Law Project, The Sentencing Project, Drug Policy Alliance, and state legal services and reentry organizations.
