Legal Council for Health Justice is a Chicago-based public interest law organization founded in 1987 as the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago. It uses legal advocacy, direct representation, education, and policy work to secure dignity, opportunity, and well-being for low-income individuals and families facing barriers due to chronic illness, disability, HIV status, or discrimination, with a focus on communities of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Access to public benefits such as Social Security Disability, Medicaid, SNAP, and Ryan White services; access to gender-affirming care and identity documents; disability rights; special education advocacy; healthcare access and insurance coverage; HIV confidentiality and anti-discrimination protections; medical-legal partnerships; and state and local policies promoting health equity.
Primarily funded through government grants and contracts, foundation grants, and philanthropic contributions, with additional revenue from charitable donations.
