Legal Momentum (formerly the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund) is the nation’s oldest legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the rights of women and girls. Founded in 1970, it uses impact litigation, policy advocacy, training and public education to promote economic security, educational equity, fairness in the courts, and protections from gender-based violence.
Workplace equality and pay equity, anti-discrimination and civil rights enforcement (including Title VII), education equity and Title IX, protections for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, reproductive justice issues, judicial education and court reform, and related state and federal legislative reforms to advance gender equity.
Primarily foundation grants and philanthropic contributions, supplemented by individual donations, program grants (including government grants) and corporate sponsorships.
Founded by leaders associated with the National Organization for Women (NOW); historically associated figures include Muriel Fox and Betty Friedan; program and coalition partners have included the National Judicial Education Program and national anti-violence and women’s rights groups (e.g., members of the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence); current leadership includes President & CEO Carol Baldwin Moody.
