The Matthew Shepard Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit founded by Matthew Shepard’s parents that works to advance dignity, equality, and acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people through public education, community outreach, survivor advocacy and programs to reduce bias-motivated violence and bullying.
Supports hate-crimes and anti-bias legislation, LGBTQ nondiscrimination and civil-rights laws, anti-bullying and safe-schools policies, inclusive education and public-awareness initiatives, and services for survivors of bias-motivated violence.
Primarily funded by individual donations, philanthropic grants, fundraising events and merchandise sales.
Founders Dennis and Judy Shepard; partners and allied organizations have included national LGBTQ and civil-rights groups such as the Human Rights Campaign, GLSEN, ACLU, The Trevor Project and PFLAG.
