About the Organization

The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) is a U.S.-based legal and policy advocacy organization founded in 1972 that works to advance gender justice and protect the rights and opportunities of women and girls, with particular focus on the needs of women of color, low-income women, and LGBTQ+ people. NWLC pursues impact through litigation, research, policy advocacy, public education, and technical assistance to influence courts, federal and state policy, and public opinion.

Policy Goals

Advocates for gender equity across policy areas including reproductive health and rights, equal pay and workplace fairness, paid leave and child care, education equity and Title IX enforcement, protections against sexual harassment and violence, access to health care and Medicaid, economic security for families, and voting and civil rights issues affecting women and marginalized communities.

Funding

Primarily supported by philanthropy and grants from private foundations, individual donations and membership contributions, and limited public funding; also maintains an affiliated action fund for independent-expenditure and lobbying activities.

Affiliates

Affiliated organizations and individuals include the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund (the organization's 501(c)(4) advocacy arm), founders and longtime leaders such as Marcia Greenberger and Nancy Duff Campbell, current president and CEO Fatima Goss Graves, and frequent partners in the gender-justice and reproductive-health sectors such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and the National Partnership for Women & Families.
