About the Organization

The Northern Alaska Environmental Center (Northern Center) is a Fairbanks-based nonprofit that promotes conservation of Interior and Arctic Alaska through education, grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and litigation; it works to protect public lands, wildlife habitat, subsistence resources and community health while advancing sustainable energy and responsible resource stewardship.

Policy Goals

Public lands protections and wilderness designation, limits on oil, gas and destructive mining development, water and air quality safeguards, wildlife and habitat conservation, Indigenous and subsistence rights, clean energy and climate mitigation, and strong environmental review and permitting processes.

Funding

Primarily foundation grants, individual donations and memberships, program grants and occasional public grants or contracts.

Affiliates

Works in coalition with organizations such as Trustees for Alaska, Alaska Songbird Institute, the Arctic Defense Campaign and Defend the Brooks Range; current leadership includes President Krystal Lapp and a regional board of directors.
