The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is the state executive agency and chief education office responsible for public K–12 education in Washington State; it implements state education law, sets academic standards and assessments, administers educator certification, provides technical assistance to school districts, distributes state and federal K–12 funding, and works to promote equity and improved student outcomes.
K–12 school funding and apportionment; academic standards and statewide assessments; special education and IDEA compliance; English learner and bilingual education; teacher certification, recruitment and professional development; early learning and preschool policy; school safety, health and student well‑being; accountability, graduation requirements and diploma policy; administration of federal education programs (Title I, II, III, etc.); equity and civil rights in education.
Primarily funded through state general fund appropriations and dedicated K–12 state revenues, supplemented by federal education grants and program-specific funds that OSPI administers and distributes to districts.
