The Office of the Attorney General of Maryland is the state's chief legal office, providing legal representation and counsel to Maryland and its agencies, enforcing state laws, protecting consumers, civil rights and the environment, pursuing public-interest and multistate litigation, handling appellate and selected criminal matters, and advising the executive and legislative branches on legal and policy questions.
Typically pursues and enforces policies on consumer protection and fraud, civil rights and anti-discrimination enforcement, environmental and public-health regulation, criminal justice and victim services, government ethics and public integrity, antitrust and corporate accountability, data privacy and cybersecurity, and coordinated multistate legal actions.
Primarily funded through Maryland state budget appropriations (general and special funds), supplemented by program fees, federal grants, and settlement proceeds where authorized.
