About the Organization

The Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PESP) is a nonprofit watchdog and advocacy organization that researches and challenges the impacts of private equity and other private funds on workers, communities, public services, housing, healthcare, and the climate. PESP’s stated mission is to increase transparency and accountability in the private funds industry and to empower stakeholders affected by private investments.

Policy Goals

Advocates for greater regulatory oversight and disclosure of private funds, stronger fiduciary stewardship by limited partners and public investors, protections for workers and unions at PE-owned companies, limits on predatory housing and healthcare practices, restrictions on private investment in detention and surveillance, and policies to shift private capital away from fossil fuels toward a just clean-energy transition.

Funding

Primarily funded by philanthropic grants from foundations and nonprofit donors, supplemented by individual donations and project-specific support.

Affiliates

Works with foundations and allied groups such as the Nathan Cummings Foundation and Park Foundation; partners on research and campaigns with organizations like Global Energy Monitor and a diverse advisory council that has included academics and policy experts (e.g., Eileen Appelbaum, Brendan Ballou, Rosemary Batt); led by executive staff including Executive Director Jim Baker.
