Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm based in Los Angeles and one of the largest pro bono legal organizations in the United States. It provides free legal services, impact litigation, and policy advocacy to low-income and underserved individuals and communities, with a mission to advance access to justice and protect the rights of children, tenants, immigrants, veterans, nonprofit organizations and other vulnerable populations.
Legal services and policy work focused on access to justice and civil legal aid; housing and homelessness prevention; tenants' rights and eviction defense; immigration relief and integration; children's rights and education equity; consumer protection and public benefits; veterans' legal services; nonprofit organizational support and capacity building; systemic impact litigation and administrative/policy advocacy.
Primarily funded by private foundation grants, individual donations, government grants and contracts, cy pres and settlement awards, corporate and law‑firm pro bono partnerships, and charitable contributions.
Originally established as the public interest arm of the Los Angeles County Bar Association; long-standing partnerships with major pro bono law firms and local legal aid organizations and networks that support joint litigation and service delivery.
