The Ray E. Helfer Society is an honorary, membership-based medical society founded in 1999 and named for pediatrician Ray E. Helfer. It promotes prevention, diagnosis, treatment, research, education and advocacy related to child abuse and neglect and seeks to strengthen clinical practice, training and ethical standards in child abuse pediatrics.
Advocacy on child welfare and child maltreatment prevention, funding for prevention and research, standards and guidelines for medical evaluation of abuse, training and workforce development for child abuse pediatrics, and health-system policies to improve multidisciplinary child protection responses.
Primarily membership dues, conference and program registration fees, donations (including through its affiliated 501(c)(3) Friends foundation), and occasional grants or sponsorships.
Maintains liaisons with organizations such as the National Child Abuse Coalition, the National Health Collaboration on Violence and Abuse and the American Academy of Pediatrics (Section on Child Abuse and Neglect); namesake Ray E. Helfer and prominent child abuse pediatricians (e.g., Howard Dubowitz, David Chadwick) are associated with the Society.
