About the Organization

Sahiyo U.S. Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit founded in 2015 that works to end female genital cutting (FGC) by empowering affected Asian and other communities through survivor-led advocacy, community dialogue, research, storytelling programs, provider training, and policy outreach across state and federal levels.

Policy Goals

Advocates for laws and policies to prevent FGC and protect children and survivors; promotes recognition of FGC as gender-based violence/sexual assault; advances culturally competent training and guidance for health, social service, education, and legal systems; supports prevention, survivor services, and community-led education initiatives.

Funding

Primarily supported by foundation and philanthropic grants, government contracts and grants, project partnerships and awards, and individual donations.

Affiliates

U.S. End FGM/C Network, Mother Africa, RTI International, National Association of Social Workers, Lesley University, Asian Women’s Shelter; organizational leaders and co-founders including Mariya Taher, Aarefa Johari, and Priya Goswami.
