About the Organization

Savanna Institute is a Midwest-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2013 that works with farmers, scientists, and partners to lay the groundwork for widespread agroforestry adoption. Inspired by native savanna ecosystems, the organization conducts research, education, demonstration farming, technical assistance, and market development to advance perennial, tree-based agricultural systems that promote ecological resilience, climate stability, and rural economic vitality.

Policy Goals

Agricultural and conservation policy, agroforestry and perennial agriculture adoption, climate resilience and climate-smart agriculture, land stewardship, research and extension funding, and rural economic development initiatives

Funding

Primarily philanthropic contributions and foundation grants, supplemented by government grants, program service revenue, and investment income

Affiliates

Midwestern farmers and landholders, University of Illinois and other academic research partners, USDA grant programs, Midwest agroforestry networks, and Executive Director Keefe Keeley
