The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a North American labor union that represents workers in healthcare, public services, property services (e.g., building services and security), and other service-sector occupations. SEIU's mission is to organize and represent service employees, negotiate collective bargaining agreements, improve wages and benefits, and advance racial, economic, and social justice for workers and communities.
Collective bargaining and union organizing; campaigns for higher wages and living wages (including minimum wage efforts); expanded access to affordable healthcare and long-term care; workplace safety and paid sick leave; immigrant worker protections; opposition to privatization of public services; and active political advocacy/electoral engagement on labor-friendly policies.
Primarily funded by member dues and assessments; political activity is supported by voluntary member contributions and the union's political committees, supplemented by campaign contributions and occasional grants.
Numerous local SEIU affiliates such as SEIU Local 32BJ, SEIU Local 1199 and SEIU Local 1000, the SEIU International organization and its political arm SEIU COPE; historically active in broader labor coalitions such as the Change to Win federation.
