About the Organization

SALDEF (Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund) is a national nonprofit that protects and advances the civil rights, civic participation, and public understanding of Sikh Americans through legal assistance, policy advocacy, community education, and leadership development.

Policy Goals

Advocacy on civil rights and anti-discrimination legislation, religious accommodation in workplaces and schools, hate-crime prevention and reporting, voting rights and civic engagement, law enforcement practices affecting religious minorities, and policies impacting immigrant and refugee communities.

Funding

Primarily funded by individual donations, philanthropic foundations and grants, membership contributions, and fundraising events.

Affiliates

Frequently partners with Sikh Coalition, United Sikhs, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), civil liberties organizations such as the ACLU, and local Sikh gurdwaras and community groups.
