About the Organization

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) is a U.S.-based professional medical society of maternal‑fetal medicine subspecialists and other clinicians and researchers focused on high‑risk pregnancy. SMFM’s mission is to advance evidence‑based care through education, research, clinical guidance, and advocacy to optimize equitable perinatal outcomes for people who desire or experience pregnancy.

Policy Goals

Clinical practice guidance for high‑risk pregnancy, maternal morbidity and mortality prevention, perinatal quality improvement, access to comprehensive reproductive health services including abortion care and family planning, maternal mental health, health equity and racial/ethnic disparity reduction, workforce training and certification, public health responses to infectious disease in pregnancy, Medicaid/Medicare policy affecting prenatal and perinatal care

Funding

Primarily funded by member dues and professional program revenue (annual meeting and educational course fees), supplemented by grants and philanthropic contributions and by industry support such as conference exhibitor and sponsorship fees

Affiliates

Collaborates with the Foundation for SMFM, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and state perinatal quality collaboratives and other maternal health partners
