About the Organization

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is an intercollegiate athletic conference made up primarily of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. Its mission is to organize and govern conference sports while promoting academic excellence, sportsmanship, integrity, and institutional control.

Policy Goals

Intercollegiate athletics governance, NCAA compliance, student-athlete academic standards, amateurism, recruiting rules, institutional control, fiscal management, and conference bylaws/resolutions affecting member schools.

Funding

Primarily funded by member institution dues and conference-generated revenues such as media rights, sponsorships, championships, and event-related income.

Affiliates

Member institutions include Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View A&M, Southern, Texas Southern, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The conference is led by Commissioner Charles McClelland.
