Sunrise Movement Orlando is the Orlando-area local chapter of the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate and social-justice movement. The chapter organizes direct actions, community outreach, and electoral advocacy to pressure elected officials and candidates to adopt ambitious climate policies that prioritize frontline communities and a just transition from fossil fuels.
Supports a Green New Deal–style platform and related legislative priorities: rapid fossil fuel phaseout, large-scale renewable energy deployment, good-paying clean-energy jobs, environmental and climate justice for frontline communities, and expanded youth civic engagement and democracy reforms.
Primarily funded through grassroots small-dollar donations and local fundraising; the national movement also receives philanthropic grants and support from progressive foundations.
Sunrise Movement (national), Sunrise Movement Action (c4), Sunrise Movement Education Fund (c3); high-profile leaders/supporters include Sunrise co-founder Varshini Prakash and allied progressive organizations such as Justice Democrats and other climate and youth-led groups.
Local chapter of a national non-profit climate advocacy movement (grassroots nonprofit/organization)
