About the Organization

The Tahirih Justice Center is a national nonprofit founded in 1997 that provides free legal representation, social services case management, training, impact litigation, and policy advocacy for immigrant women, girls, and other survivors of gender-based violence and persecution. Tahirih combines direct services with systems‑change advocacy to secure protection, expand gender‑based asylum and survivor visas, and prevent exploitation such as forced and child marriage.

Policy Goals

Immigration and asylum policy (including recognition of gender‑based persecution), access to VAWA protections, T and U visas and other survivor visas, anti‑human trafficking and anti‑forced‑marriage laws, survivor‑centered alternatives to detention and removal, funding for legal services and social supports, and training/standards for frontline professionals.

Funding

Primarily funded through foundation grants and philanthropic donations, individual contributions, government grants and contracts, and pro bono partnerships with law firms and professional volunteers.

Affiliates

Founder Layli Miller‑Muro (Founder and Senior Advisor), Chief Executive Officer Archi Pyati, a network of pro bono law firm partners (historically including large national firms), and membership/partnership with national survivor‑rights coalitions such as the National Network to Prevent Forced Marriage.
