About the Organization

The American Legion is a congressionally chartered U.S. veterans service organization founded in 1919 that advocates for veterans, servicemembers, and their families while promoting patriotism, national security, community service, and youth programs.

Policy Goals

Advocacy for veterans' benefits and VA healthcare, military readiness and strong national defense, veterans' education and employment programs, homelessness and suicide-prevention initiatives for veterans, support for youth programs (e.g., American Legion Baseball, Boys State), patriotism and civic engagement measures

Funding

Primarily membership dues, donations and charitable contributions, fundraising and program fees, grants and sponsorships, and revenue from publications and events
