About the Organization

The Arc of the United States is the largest national community-based organization advocating for and serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. Founded by parent advocacy groups in the mid-20th century, The Arc promotes and protects the human rights of people with I/DD and supports their full inclusion and participation in community life across the lifespan.

Policy Goals

Public policy and advocacy focused on Medicaid and home- and community-based services (HCBS), special education (IDEA implementation), Social Security/SSI policy and financial security, employment and vocational supports, community integration and housing, civil rights and anti-discrimination, guardianship and supported decision-making reform, and funding for disability services at federal and state levels.

Funding

Revenue mix of membership dues and fees from affiliated chapters, private donations and philanthropic grants, foundation support, government grants and contracts, and program/service fees administered through state and local chapters.

Affiliates

A nationwide federation of nearly 600 state and local chapters (for example The Arc of California, The Arc of New York, The Arc of the East Bay); national leadership (CEO) and collaborations with other disability advocacy coalitions and partner organizations.
