About the Organization

Whitman-Walker Institute is the research, training, policy and public-health arm of Whitman-Walker Health, a Washington, D.C.-based community health organization. It advances sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention and care, behavioral health, and health equity for LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV through applied research, program development, community education, and policy advocacy.

Policy Goals

Promotes expanded access to HIV prevention and treatment (including PrEP and ART), LGBTQ+ health equity and anti-discrimination protections, Medicaid and insurance coverage for sexual and behavioral health services, harm reduction and overdose prevention, public-health workforce training, and evidence-based public health research and evaluation.

Funding

Funded through a mix of patient service revenue and insurance reimbursements, federal and state public-health and HIV/AIDS grants, foundation and philanthropic grants, and individual donations.

Affiliates

Whitman-Walker Health (the parent community health center), partnerships with the District of Columbia Department of Health and other local public-health agencies, and collaborative relationships with national public-health and HIV/AIDS service organizations.
