1000 Friends of Iowa is a statewide nonprofit organization founded in 1998 and based in Des Moines that promotes responsible and equitable land use, smart growth, and sustainable development. Its mission is to engage and unite Iowans to protect farmland and natural areas, revitalize neighborhoods, towns, and cities, and improve quality of life for future generations through advocacy, education, and citizen engagement.
Responsible land use and anti-sprawl policies, farmland and natural resource protection, smart growth and equitable transportation planning, climate change and renewable energy initiatives, and sustainable community development at the local, state, and federal levels.
Primarily funded through individual contributions and charitable donations, along with foundation grants.
Collaborates with Smart Growth America and is part of a broader network of 1000 Friends organizations across the United States.
