The ACLU of Virginia is the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union that works to defend and expand individual rights and liberties in Virginia through litigation, legislative advocacy, public education, and community organizing.
Pursues policies and legal challenges related to free speech and assembly, voting rights and election access, criminal legal reform and policing accountability, privacy and limits on surveillance, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ equality, reproductive freedom, racial justice, and public education equity.
Primarily funded by individual donations and membership dues, supplemented by foundation grants, fundraising events, and occasional litigation-related awards or grants to affiliated entities.
