The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is a nonprofit charitable organization founded in 1951 that works to alleviate animal suffering caused by people and to improve the welfare of animals in agriculture, commerce, homes and communities, research, and the wild.
Animal welfare and animal protection policy, including laws and regulations affecting farmed animals, companion animals, animals in research, marine wildlife, terrestrial wildlife, humane treatment in commerce and transport, anti-cruelty enforcement, and habitat protection.
Primarily supported by charitable donations and contributions from supporters and donors; AWI states that more than 90 percent of funds go to program expenses.
Founded by Christine Stevens; leadership includes a board of directors and a scientific committee. Publicly noted figures associated with AWI include Jane Goodall, who has praised founder Christine Stevens.
