About the Organization

Earthworks is a U.S.-based environmental nonprofit that works with frontline communities to prevent and reduce the harmful impacts of oil, gas and hardrock mining. The organization combines technical science, community organizing and policy advocacy to push for stronger pollution controls, corporate accountability and a just transition away from fossil fuels and harmful mining practices.

Policy Goals

Regulation of oil, gas, and mining pollution; methane and air emissions controls; stronger permitting and cleanup enforcement for mining and drilling; environmental justice and protections for frontline and Indigenous communities; federal and state rulemaking and legislative reforms to limit fossil fuel expansion and promote just clean energy transitions

Funding

Primarily foundation and philanthropic grants (major foundations), supplemented by individual donations; does not accept government funding and states it only accepts donations from socially responsible and green companies

Affiliates

Earthjustice, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Sierra Club, Clean Air Task Force, Environmental Defense Fund, EarthShare; frequently partners with local frontline and Indigenous community groups and receives grants from foundations such as the MacArthur Foundation
