About the Organization

The National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association of state and territorial emergency management directors from all 50 states, eight U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. It provides national leadership, policy advocacy, information sharing, and professional development to strengthen emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.

Policy Goals

Emergency preparedness and response, disaster recovery, mitigation, homeland security, emergency management funding, federal-state coordination, mutual aid, emergency communications, training and professionalization of emergency management, and related congressional and administrative policy issues.

Funding

Primarily membership dues, sponsorships, program revenue, and support through its affiliation with the Council of State Governments; it also administers and participates in federally supported emergency management initiatives and partnerships.

Affiliates

Affiliate of the Council of State Governments; closely associated with state and territorial emergency management directors; partners with organizations such as ASTHO and the Governors’ Homeland Security Advisors Council; administers the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).
